From Coach Mike:

When discussing how swimmers can improve we often talk about what they are doing in the water, but there is much going on outside of the pool that greatly impacts them as well.  These out of the pool factors play a key role in the training of swimmers of all ages.  Specifically I am talking about the amount of rest swimmers get, their nutrition, and their attitudes.  For a swimmer to retain the most of what they have mentally and physically learned in the pool all three of these factors must be addressed:

Rest and recovery is key in allowing the body and mind to process what it has learned and to get ready for the next lesson.  To do this effectively it is suggested by many experts to get, at the very least, eight hours of sleep each night.

Eating healthy, well-balanced meals will allow the body and mind to receive the necessary fuel it needs to work efficiently.  This means eating a variety of food from all the different food groups.

A positive attitude towards swimming is a good start, but in an attempt to avoid unnecessary external stresses an overall positive attitude is best.  These stresses can quickly deteriorate a person mentally and can even be seen physically.  One negative person in a community can have a widespread effect and strongly gripped impact on the rest, resulting in greatly reduced performances in and out of the water.

A person can obviously get by without doing any one of these things, but most people are not here to just get by.  To excel in and out of the pool these three factors, together, play a crucial role in getting a person to be the best they can be.
